Egypt close to exiting ILO black list

Egypt could be taken off the International Labor Organization (ILO) blacklist thanks to the 25 January revolution and ouster of former President Hosni Mubarak's regime, Al-Masry Al-Youm has learned.

Egypt has been blacklisted in past years due to its government's violations of international agreements on labor freedoms and intervention in trade union affairs, which drew much criticism from member states.

Informed sources told Al-Masry Al-Youm that Egypt is strongly recommended for removal from the list during the organization's conference, scheduled for June.

The sources added that the ILO's head, Juan Somavia, is expected to visit Cairo within days to meet Egypt's new interim prime minister, Essam Sharaf, as well as the ministers of finance, manpower, and foreign affairs.

Somavia is slated to discuss a number of projects potentially to be carried out by the ILO in Egypt to help the country out of its current impasse.
