Approximately 10,000 workers from Telecom Egypt staged sit-ins this morning at the telephone exchange centers in Ramsis, Opera, Nozha, Maadi, Helwan and Helipolis to protest company plans to amend salary scales.
The protesters called for a ceiling for the salaries of senior level managers, the abolition of the system which allows employees to hold multiple positions, and setting maximum and minimum levels for bonuses at 15 and 20 percent.
The workers also protested what they said were attempts by the administration to lower bonuses from 15 to 10 percent as well as the appointment of thousands of employees through favoritism.
They also complained that some of the top level managers receive salaries of LE250,000 while the salaries of those in lower positions fail to exceed LE1000.
Meanwhile, Safeya al-Sayyed, member of the Egyptian Federation of Trade Unions(EFTU) and vice president of the communications syndicate, said that Hussein Megawer, the head of the EFTU, supports the workers’ demands.
Oqeil Basheer, the chairperson of Telecom Egypt, tried to temper the anger of the protesters in Ramsis and examine their demands within four days, but the workers insisted on an immediate response.
