The US embassy in Cairo denied involvement in an incident in which a diplomatic vehicle was used to run over a number of protesters in al-Qasr al-Einy street, Cairo, on 28 January.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the embassy confirmed that none of its employees or diplomats were involved in the incident, saying that a number of the embassy’s vehicles had been stolen on 28 January.
“Since these vehicles were stolen we have heard reports of their use in violent and criminal acts. If true, we deplore these acts and their perpetrators.”
The white Chevrolet van with diplomatic license plates was driven with speed through the street which was packed with protesters, hours after police had withdrawn from Cairo streets, killing some and injuring others.
