Sorour asks PM to respond to interpellations on demonstrations

Parliament speaker Fathi Sorour has asked prime Minister Ahmed Nazif to attend Sunday’s parliamentary session to respond to interpellations concerning the recent wave of anti-government demonstrations staged countrywide.

Sorour called on the government "to not bury its head in the sand" and address the grievances of the people, especially those regarding unemployment and inflation.

On calls by certain opposition groups for the dissolution of parliament, Sorour stressed, “Only the president has this right.”

On his opinion of how the government has handled the demonstrations, he said that he wanted to remain on good terms with the government in his capacity as house speaker. “But should I step down from the podium, I would have worse things to say than the opposition," Sorour said.
