Security forces on Thursday besieged the city of Baltim in the Kafr al-Sheikh Governorate, which is located north of Cairo, fearing additional protests in the city known for being an opposition stronghold.
The city witnessed a huge protest on Tuesday by 5000 demonstrators, spearheaded by former MP Hamadein Sabahi, an opposition figure. Protesters engaged in violent clashes with security forces during the demonstration.
A state of calm has since come over the city, with central security vehicles omnipresent at every road leading into Baltim.
Cars heading to Baltim have been searched for protesters on the security's wanted lists.
Undercover agents deployed inside the city have arrested 18 people thus far. They will be referred to prosecutors in Kafr al-Sheikh.
