The Muslim Brotherhood (MB), Egypt's largest opposition group, says it did not take part in a demonstration held in Cairo's central Tahrir Square on Tuesday, one of several “Day of Rage” protests held in several cities throughout the country.
The MB statement came in response to claims by the Egyptian Interior Ministry that the group had incited the demonstration.
“The protest in Tahrir Square erupted spontaneously,” said MB spokesman Essam al-Erian, asserting that the group “did not send anyone.”
“The government knows exactly who's staging these demonstrations,” he added. “We hope it heeds the people's demands."
