Protesters clashed with security forces in Cairo's northern Mattariya district on Tuesday after the latter attempted to impose a security cordon around angry demonstrators.
The "Day of Rage" demonstrations–organized by the 6 April reform movement, the Social Justice Party, the Nasserist Party and the Muslim Brotherhood–featured banners demanding the removal of Egypt's ruling regime and the dismissal of the interior minister.
Demonstrators also loudly condemned skyrocketing inflation and unemployment.
MP for Mattariya Mimi al-Omda reportedly joined security forces in preventing passers-by from watching or participating in the demonstrations.
“Their demands are illogical,” al-Omda said of the protestors. “Prices have actually gone down.”
