Egypt govt security detains protesters in Cairo and Assiut

Rights activists on Tuesday said security agents have detained a number of protesters who were taking part in a demonstration called for by opposition groups to protest the country's declining conditions.

Twenty-five young people have been arrested at Walidiya, Assiut, South of Cairo, according to Gamal Eid, director of the Arab Network for Human Rights Information (ANHRI). He noted that security agents seized banners hoisted by the protesters.

The 6 of April Youth movement and opposition group had declared that Walidiya will be the starting point for Assiut's protests.

Central Security vehicles crowded in front of the al-Azhar and Assuit universities, al-Magzoub and al-Sadat squares, and Nasser and Aboul Goud mosques.

Security sources told Al-Masry Al-Youm that Assuit's police arrested approximately 50 young people on Monday night and confined them in central security trucks.

Meanwhile, sources at the Muslim Brotherhood, Egypt's largest opposition group, said a number of the group’s members have been detained in Mohandessin, Cairo where they assembled before heading to join demonstrations scheduled for 2PM on Tuesday.

Eyewitnesses said that Ayman Nour, the founder of the liberal opposition al-Ghad Party, has organized a popular march at Bab al-Sharqiya, Cairo, accompanied by scores of citizens, demanding to oust the Mubarak regime.

Security forces have shut down the al-Ghad’s headquarter in Talaat Harb Square in downtown Cairo as police officers took up positions in front of the building.
