‘Extremely violent’ storm is coming, Egyptian climate official warns

The head of the Climate Change Information Center at the Ministry of Agriculture, Mohamed Ali Fahim, has warned that an “extremely violent” storm this week will impact the the country for 72 hours.

This comes after the country experienced a storm last weekend that disrupted government offices and schools, prompting a state of alert among government agencies.

Fahim explained that the storm will begin Tuesday evening and continue until the end of Thursday, RT reported on Sunday.

He emphasized that “What awaits the country is not just rain, but a comprehensive scenario of heavy thunderstorms, flash floods, strong winds, and a sharp drop in nighttime temperatures,” stressing that this requires serious preparation.

Wednesday will be ‘most dangerous’

Fahim noted that the weather system will begin Tuesday afternoon with rain in Siwa and Marsa Matrouh in western Egypt, extending by evening to include Lower Egypt, the Suez Canal cities, northern Upper Egypt, and Sinai.

These rains are expected to be moderate to heavy, with occasional thunderstorms.

The most severe weather will be on Wednesday, he said, with very heavy rain and thunderstorms expected across most of the country. The heaviest rainfall is expected in Marsa Matrouh and Alexandria, accompanied by the possibility of hail in the Nile Delta, the Suez Canal region, and Sinai.

Fahim also warned of potential flash floods in the New Valley, Oases, and southern Upper Egypt, along with strong winds stirring up sand and dust, and a sharp drop in nighttime temperatures.

According to Fahim, Thursday, will see continued rainfall across most of the country – though less intense – concentrated in Lower Egypt, Sinai, and northern Upper Egypt, with a noticeable drop in temperature at night.

The severe weather will end on Friday morning with a gradual decrease in rainfall, although light to moderate rain will continue in southern Upper Egypt (Qena, Luxor, and southern Sohag).

Fahim stressed that this is strongest periods of weather instability this season, urging the public to take immediate preventative measures to mitigate its potential impact.
