Egypt’s Petroleum Ministry assures oil reserves at safe levels

The spokesperson for the Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Mahmoud Nagy, confirmed that with the onset of military escalation in the Middle East, the ministry acted swiftly by activating its central operations room to monitor all activity related to the petroleum sector, including both gas and petroleum products.

During a phone interview on Extra News on Saturday, Nagy indicated that oil reserves remain stable at safe levels.

Nagy said that Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawy began Saturday with a meeting at the National Natural Gas Control Center, which provides all supplies to power plants, industrial facilities, homes, and factories, to ensure the stability and continuity of service and product distribution to all sectors nationwide.

He added, “Proactive steps have been taken in the petroleum sector to maintain gas supplies, including infrastructure development, investment in the sector, and the construction of several regasification terminals to receive liquefied natural gas (LNG) and reinject it into the national grid. This helps mitigate any disruptions to the grid’s supply chain.”

Wide variety of supply sources

Egypt has a wide variety of supply sources and works with multiple international companies, Nagy noted.

The ministry also has long-term contracts with institutions supplying petroleum products and natural gas, as well as government contracts, which reduces the impact of fluctuations and price increases, he said.

Nagy explained, “When we rely on a single source, any change creates a problem with supply availability. However, Egypt has diversified sources, and there is a portion of domestic production.”

The Minister of Petroleum in the operations room directed the relevant officials to maximize domestic production and closely monitor the output of the fields, refineries, and production companies, he added.

Nagy affirmed that he is in constant communication with all parties involved, emphasizing the commitment to ensuring a continuous power supply for both ordinary consumers and industrial sectors to minimize disruption to daily life in Egypt.

He continued, “Extensive preparations have been made for all possible scenarios to address regional crises and problems. We have multiple scenarios in place, and one is currently being activated. Coordination is ongoing with officials at the Ministry of Electricity to manage the crisis without impacting the Egyptian state.”
