Egypt, Slovenia discuss economic ties, direct air links

CAIRO, Nov 24 (MENA) – Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty underlined Egypt’s keenness to advance cooperation with Slovenia across economic, trade, investment, and cultural fields, as well as efforts to launch direct flights between the two countries to support tourism and investment flows.

The minister held talks on Monday with Tanja Fajon, Slovenia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, on the sidelines of the African-European Summit in Angola.

Abdelatty praised strong and distinguished bilateral relations between the two countries, welcoming the outcomes of the second session of the Joint Economic Committee held in Ljubljana in 2024 under the co-chairmanship of both foreign ministers. He also expressed Egypt’s readiness to host the third session in Cairo later this year.

In the economic domain, the minister highlighted opportunities to increase Egyptian exports to EU markets through Slovenia and proposed establishing a maritime transport line to serve as a gateway for Egyptian goods into Europe.

The two ministers also discussed expanding cooperation in the ports sector, building on the existing partnership between Koper and Alexandria ports, and extending it to other Egyptian ports such as Ain Sokhna and Damietta.

Abdelatty emphasized Egypt’s interest in strengthening cooperation in clean and renewable energy, particularly the production and export of green hydrogen and methanol to Europe.

Talks also covered coordination within the Union for the Mediterranean, especially on issues related to migration, refugees, energy, environment, and climate change.

The ministers exchanged views on regional and international developments of mutual concern, with a particular focus on the situation in the Gaza Strip and the importance of implementing the latest UN Security Council resolution, as well as progressing toward the second phase of the peace plan.

Abdelatty stressed the need to enable the International Stabilization Force to carry out its mandate, consolidate the ceasefire, and ensure the safety of Palestinians inside the Gaza Strip.

He also reviewed preparations underway for the upcoming international conference on early recovery and reconstruction in Gaza. (MENA)
