The UN Security Council adopted the US-drafted resolution supporting US President Donald Trump’s plan to end the war in the Gaza strip, with 13 countries voting in favor and Russia and China abstaining.
Several experts said that the resolution grants the US control over Gaza and paves the way for a transitional phase led by Washington politically, administratively, economically, and socially through the Peace Council and “stabilization forces.”
They added to Al-Masry Al-Youm that the resolution does not include any clause forcing Israel to withdraw, nor does it address the core of the Palestinian issue.
Rather, it focuses on consolidating US control over Gaza and creating a reality that serves Israel more than the Palestinians.
‘A historic moment’, US proclaims
US President Donald Trump described the resolution as “a historic moment that will lead to more global peace,” emphasizing that the vote constitutes international recognition of the Peace Council, which he will chair.
The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asserted that the plan would bring “peace and prosperity,” as it calls for “the complete disarmament of Gaza, the eradication of extremism, and the expansion of the Abraham Accords.”
The Palestinian Authority welcomed the decision, affirming its readiness to participate in its implementation to ensure a ceasefire, restore normal life in the Gaza Strip, withdrawal of Israeli forces, halt any attempts to undermine the two-state solution, and reconstruction.
However, various other Palestinian factions and political forces categorically rejected the decision in a statement issued on Tuesday, calling it instrument of international trusteeship over the Palestinian people, a prelude to entrenching the division and deepening the separation of Gaza from the West Bank, and an undermining of the “idea of a Palestinian state.”
An expert on Israeli affairs, Nazzal Nizar, said that the project “lacks a genuine political vision and enshrines international trusteeship over Gaza, effectively separating it from the Palestinian territories occupied in 1948 and the West Bank.”
He emphasized that “it does not include any clause obligating Israel to withdraw, nor does it address the core of the Palestinian issue. Rather, it focuses on consolidating American control over Gaza and creating a reality that serves Israel more than it serves the Palestinians.”
