Hamas was expected to respond Tuesday evening to a US proposal for a Gaza ceasefire, a diplomat briefed on the talks told CNN, before Israel’s strike on Qatar disrupted the plans.
A Qatari negotiation team “worked through Monday night into early Tuesday morning” on the phone with “senior Israeli negotiators” to try and get an agreement on the latest US peace proposal, the diplomat said.
The team was then “due to get Hamas’ response to the US initiative at Tuesday evening,” the diplomat said.
The Israeli strike on a Doha building housing Hamas leadership happened on Tuesday afternoon.
