A fire broke out on board the KM3 Barcelona ferry while sailing in the waters of North Sulawesi province in Indonesia.
According to a circulating video, passengers jumped into the sea to escape the raging flames.
Hours after the shocking video circulated, the Indonesian Navy announced the safe evacuation of all passengers on board the KM3 Barcelona ferry.
“All passengers were safely evacuated,” Vice Admiral Denih Hendrata, commander of the naval fleet, told the Indonesian news agency Antara.
The commander of the 8th Naval Base in Manado, May Franky Pasuna Sihombing, confirmed that teams were able to rescue 280 passengers, but three of them died from illnesses, not from the fire.
He added, “Rescue teams are continuing to inspect the ship to ensure it is free of any other passengers.”
The ferry was sailing from a port in the Talaud Islands to Manado, the capital of North Sulawesi province.
