Ambassador Mohamed al-Shennawy assumed new duties as the official spokesperson for the Presidency on Wednesday, succeeding Ambassador Ahmed Fahmy who has been appointed Ambassador to Hungary.
Al-Shennawy holds a law degree from Cairo University and a master’s degree in international law from the University of London.
He kicked off his career as a deputy public prosecutor, then joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1995 where he worked in the Department of International Legal Affairs and Treaties, followed by postings at the Egyptian Embassy in The Hague and the Minister of Foreign Affairs’ office.
Subsequently, he joined the Permanent Mission of Egypt to the United Nations in New York, then the Minister of Foreign Affairs’ office again upon his return to Cairo, and then rejoined the Permanent Mission of Egypt to the United Nations in New York as part of the Egyptian delegation during its membership in the Security Council.
In 2019, he served as Deputy Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Ministerial Affairs until his appointment as Ambassador of Egypt to Hungary, until his selection as the official spokesperson for the Presidency.
Throughout his long and distinguished diplomatic career, Ambassador al-Shennawy has participated in meetings of the United Nations General Assembly from 2007 to 2019, and as a member of the Egyptian delegation in the negotiations on the demarcation of maritime borders between Egypt and Greece.
He also participated in Egypt’s campaign to obtain a non-permanent seat on the Security Council for the years 2016-2017, and was responsible for the file of Egypt’s presidency of the Counter-Terrorism Committee of the Security Council, and the expert representing Egypt in the committees of the United Nations General Assembly dealing with legal affairs, financial and administrative matters of the United Nations, and United Nations peacekeeping and peacebuilding operations, and in negotiations related to the issue of expanding and reforming the Security Council.
