FM: Gaza, Lebanon ceasefire essential for regional de-escalation

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty emphasized Saturday 26/10/2024 that a ceasefire in Gaza is essential for regional de-escalation.

A ceasefire in Lebanon is equally crucial to mitigate the ongoing risks of escalation, which could impact every nation in the region, the foreign minister added during a joint press conference with his Ukrainian counterpart Andrii Sybiha in Cairo.

Abdelatty emphasized that Egypt, as a significant regional and global actor, is dedicated to promoting security and stability. He cautioned that ongoing escalation could result in a full-scale war in the region, with no real winners.

He mentioned that Egypt is in communication with all relevant parties, including recent discussions between President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and his Iranian counterpart Masoud Pezeshkian at the Kazan Summit. “These efforts are aimed at preventing further escalation and avoiding a regional war.”

The focus is on stopping unilateral and provocative actions, as well as bringing an end to aggression and daily violence in Gaza, the minister said.

The top diplomat emphasized that a political solution is crucial, urging all parties to prioritize rational dialogue over military action as no side can achieve lasting peace through military power alone.

He highlighted that peace can only be attained by restoring legitimate rights, particularly the Palestinian right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent state along the borders of June 4, 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital. “Without these measures, true security and stability in the region will remain elusive, even for Israel.”
