Foreign Ministry explains reasoning for Egypt’s military support to Somalia

The spokesperson for the Egyptian Foreign Ministry Tamim Khallaf, revealed the reasons for Egypt’s military support towards Somalia.

During a phone interview with “Yahdoth fi Masr” (Happening in Egypt) program, on MBC Masr, on Tuesday evening, Khallaf said that Somalia is an ally with very good historical relations with Egypt.

He explained that Egypt’s position is clear, as it supports the efforts of the central authority and the federal government in Somalia to combat terrorism and achieve security and stability.

Egypt respects the unity, integrity and sovereignty of Somali lands, he assured, and rejects any tampering with Somalia’s internal affairs and its sovereignty.

He noted the signing of a military cooperation protocol between the two countries in August, pointing to the Somali president’s request to President Sisi to provide military support, in light of the unrest and serious challenges facing Somalia in combating terrorism.

This agreement is should be viewed within its bilateral framework, he explained, and only seeks to support a fellow Arab nation with the requested assistance rather than specifically targeting a party.

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry spokesperson said that the Horn of Africa region is of great importance to Egyptian national security, adding that Egypt’s support for Somalia serves not only Egyptian national security, but also the security of Somalia and the entire region.
