Cairo bans cutting trees in all neighborhoods

Cairo Governor Ibrahim Saber issued a decision on Tuesday to ban the cutting or unwarranted pruning of trees in all neighborhoods of the capital, referring to the opinion of a committee he formed in the event of a need to move trees under the supervision of the Environment Ministry.

Saber ordered the head of the Cairo Cleaning and Beautification Authority to establish a plant nursery in every neighborhood, where trees would be sold at nominal prices to citizens.

This decision follows from social media uproar against tree cutting in Egypt.

Concerns online have spread that the trees were being cut down to transform entire neighborhoods into real estate projects – as in addition to removing hundreds of homes, thousands of trees were cut to widen roads.
