Low temperatures drive up crop prices

The current cold snap has caused the prices of vegetables and fruits to rise due to shortages of supply, according to grocers.

The prices of tomatoes increased to LE2-LE3.5 per kilo and those of potatoes to LE2-LE4.The price of okra fluctuated between LE4 and LE5 and those of bell peppers between LE3 and LE5.

Ahmed Naguib, a green grocer at the Obour market, noted a considerable increase in vegetables prices, especially tomatoes where the bulk price of 20kg packages climbed to LE35 per kilo from LE20 on Friday.

The price of eggplants and cucumbers rose to LE3.5 per kilo, up from LE1.5 on Friday.

Naguib attributed the drop in supplies to cold weather that has lowered productivity and discouraged farmers from harvesting.
