An Egyptian court on Saturday sentenced 10 defendants to death for forming a terrorist cell with the intention to attack state institutions, assault freedom, damage national unity, target and kill Christians, disrupt public order, endanger society and attack the armed forces.
The Giza Criminal Court also sentences five other suspects in what is known as the “Imbaba terror cell” case to life imprisonment.
The court said that the defendants were found guilty of establishing a terrorist cell in Giza governorate between 2013 until March 2015, and for attacking and killing police personnel and Christians using various weapons and explosive devices.
The court started hearings in the case in September 2015 after the State Security Prosecution investigated the defendants and referred the case to the court with confessions by some defendants saying that they established the terrorist cell to overthrow the country’s government.
The group was also accused of aiming to endanger society by possessing firearms, participating in gatherings intended to commit a murder, destroying public property, attempting to kill police and army officers, destroying a police vehicle, and manufacturing explosive devices.
