Court starts hearings in murder of Egyptian engineer by Italian tourist

The Red Sea Criminal Court on Monday started hearings in the case of Italian tourist Ivan Pascal Moro on charges of murdering an Egyptian hotel engineer in August.

The court adjourned the trial until February 12 to summon eyewitnesses in the case.

Moro did not attend Monday’s trial session.

The defendant was released on a LE100.000 bail in September after a decision to ban him from traveling abroad was issued.

Red Sea prosecutors referred Moro to a criminal court in October on charges of beating supervising hotel engineer Tarik Abdel Hamidin to death at a hotel building site in the Red Sea resort of Marsa Alam.

The beating was triggered by an altercation between the two men where Hamidin allegedly told Moro not to enter a restricted construction area, according to a Tourism Ministry statement.

The Tourism Ministry has said that Moro confessed to the murder of Hamidin.
