Border guards arrested 12 smugglers and seized weapons, ammunition and drugs during a smuggling attempt in the Great Sand Sea, western Egypt. Meanwhile, border guards in North Sinai discovered a 10-meter-deep illegal smuggling tunnel in North Sinai.
Border guards seized eight SUVs in the Great Sand Sea area that were carrying half a ton of hashish, 3.3 million tablets for different types of drugs, two sniper rifles, one Kalashnikov rifle, 1,550 different types of bullets and other items , said Armed Forces spokesperson Tamer al-Refaei on his official Facebook page.
The Air Force took part in the chase for smugglers through the desert, in cooperation with border guards. Two SUVs were destroyed during the chase, according to Refaei.
Refaei added that a concrete tunnel was discovered at a depth of 10 meters on the border strip in North Sinai, used by extremists in smuggling operations, in addition to the seizure of three defensive bombs and three magazines for automatic rifles belonging to extremists, south of Rafah.
