Parliament to review amendments to Criminal Procedure Law: Justice Minister

The amendments to the Criminal Procedure law have been finalized and will be submitted to the Cabinet next week ahead of being reviewed by the Parliament, the Justice Ministry announced.

Following a terrorist attack on a church late last year, which left 25 victims, the president called for the Criminal Procedures Law to be amended to address the slow pace of litigation and to swiftly handle terrorism-related cases

At the opening of a new complex of courts in Banha on Sunday, Minister Mohamed Hossam abdel Rehim said his ministry is considering increasing the number of courts that can review terrorism trials during the coming period so as to meet the increase in the number of suspects and cases.

The minister said 11 new courts will be opened this month and 36 more courts will be opened during fiscal year 2017/18.

“The ministry launched the first phase of the electronic archive project to archive 60 million cases,” he said, adding that 70,000 out of a total of 100,000 cases were archived in the first phase at 6 October and Giza courts.
