Social Solidarity Minister Ghada Wali has ordered the closure of an orphanage after five girls were found to have been beaten and subjected to burns.
A statement on Saturday explained that the decision was taken after a team from the ministry paid a visit to the orphanage and met with the girls.
Burns and bruises were found on their bodies. A medical report on one of the girls showed she had second-degree burns.
“In light of what some of the girls in the orphanage were allegedly subjected to, a committee from the social work department visited the orphanage to check if the report was true. Some violations were found against the girls, thus the department ordered closure on November 24,” the statement read.
“The girls were transferred to another nearby orphanage on November 25. Two supervisors from their original orphanage are accompanying the girls to help them feel safe under supervision of the ministry, the Cairo department and the committee. The rest of the legal measures are also being taken,” it said.
