A military court in Assiut has handed down prison sentences of between five and ten years to 117 alleged Muslim Brotherhood members convicted of attacking a church and conducting an attack on an electricity transformer.
According to defense lawyers, 106 suspects were given five years behind bars for storming the Mar Girgis church in Deir Mowas city, Minya, and setting it on fire. The incident took place during the dispersal of the Rabaa al-Adaweya and Nahda sit-ins in 2013.
Another 11 suspects were given 10-year sentences for forming a terrorist group and blowing up an electricity transformer in Minya in April 2015.
The public prosecution had referred the two cases to military court, along with a range of charges, including: affiliation to a banned group; involvement in violence; rioting; breaking into and damaging public properties; and planning to damage governmental properties.
