The European Union (EU) Delegation to Egypt announced the winners of the eight annual photography contest for amateurs on Sunday. The competition, entitled "Egypt is the Gift of the Nile", was launched on September 15 with the aim of shedding light on the "Nile River", the life of Egypt.
While "Egypt is the Gift of the Nile", according to the Greek historian Herodotus, the competitors were encouraged to capture the significance of the Nile River as a historic symbol of life and stability.
Since ancient times, Egyptian civilization has revolved around the Nile as it is crucial for trade and tourism. The competition motivated the participants to explore different aspects of the Nile, shedding light on the importance this river has on all Egyptians and how it affects their lives.
The competition began in 2008 and a total of 1,000 contestants have participated since then.
In 2014, over 200 photos were submitted by 75 different contestants hailing from all corners of Egypt. The EU delegation to Egypt will give out prizes to the first three winners and the EU's Egypt delegation will create a 2016 desk calendar that will feature the top 12 photos. An awards ceremony and exhibition will also be held for the top 30 photos.
