Recession detected in ready-made local garments industry

There is a recession in the market of ready-made garments, according to Yehia Zananiri of the Chambers of Commerce Federation.

“Consumers prefer imported clothes despite the high prices,” Zananiri said, warning that this industry, which constitutes 60 percent of the market, is now threatened.

“Turkish clothes represent 30 percent of the market,” he explained, attributing the sales to the high quality and reasonable prices of the garments. “They are cheaper than the European products.”

Zananiri said Egyptian companies can come up with fashionable designs, but the cost of importing raw materials is high. “Also, Egyptian workers are not trained to make complicated designs,” he said.

He also warned of smuggled products. “The government must facilitate customs' procedures and duties to save the industry,” he said.
