The Freedoms Committee of the Journalists' Syndicate denounced, in a statement Sunday evening, the return of old police practices against journalists after the arrest of journalist Abdel Rahman Mohamed Abdel Rahman from his house.
Abdel Rahman is a journalist with the National Company for Distribution and deputy editor-in-chief of Al-Mesryoon newspaper.
A police force stormed his house in the Qanater area and arrested him Sunday at dawn.
The committee called for investigating the way the journalist was arrested and warned of the return of old police practices like the fabrication of charges against journalists. The statement called for the release of journalist Sobhy Shoeib, who has not been released even after the prosecution ordered his release, which reflects the Interior Ministry's disregard for the law, the statement added.
The current number of detained journalists surpasses 33, according to the committee's statement.
The statement called for a unified position by journalists to face the phenomenon of journalists' arrest and referral to criminal trials over unauthentic investigations.
