Prime Minister Sherif Ismail has admitted to a poor performance by his government during violent rainstorms that killed five people and pummeled the Mediterranean province of Alexandria on Sunday.
“Nobody can deny there was inefficiancy in dealing with the crisis…but necessary measures were taken despite the unpredictable amount of rain,” Ismail said in statements on Tuesday, commenting on the crisis that forced Alexandria Governor Hany al-Messiry to tender his resignation in response to public anger.
Ismail said the selection of a new governor of Alexandria is underway, but did not rule out the possibility of a broader reshuffle of governors.
Early Wednesday, accelerating winds and rising sea waves prompted people to leave streets and close their shops fearing a repeated crisis.
