Presenter defends candidate against Brotherhood-linked accusations

Media host and journalist Ibrahim Eissa has called accusations against political expert and parliamentary runner Amr al-Shobky for being affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood “silly”.

“Accusing Shobky of belonging to the Brotherhood is absolute craziness,” Eissa said during his show on satellite TV channel AlKahera wal Nas on Sunday. “Shobky was a member of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi’s advisory board..whoever believes the rumor that he belongs to the Brotherhood is insane,” he said.

Shobky’s competitors at the Dokki and Agouza constituency, Abdel-Rahim Ali, chief editor of Albawabh News, and Ahmed Mortada Mansour, board member of Zamalek Sports Club, have accused him of being connected to the Brotherhood.

Egypt branded the Brotherhood a terrorist organization in 2013, shortly after the ouster of former president and group leader Mohamed Morsi.

Shobky is competing with Mansour in the runoffs for the first phase of elections for the House of Representatives slated between October 26 and 28.
