Antiquities Minister Mamdouh Damaty has announced that the ministry has taken the necessary legal measures to stop the sale of several artifacts belonging to Egypt's Islamic era during a London auction Wednesday.
The General Directorate of Recovered Antiquities monitors galleries and auctions abroad on a regular basis to prevent the sale of smuggled Egyptian antiquities, Damaty added in a statement Monday.
The Antiquities Ministry notified the Foreign Ministry on September 14 to stop the sale of Egyptian artifacts at Sotheby's auction in London.
The director of the Recovered Antiquities Department said a manuscript belonging to the Mamluk era, under Sultan Ashraf Qansuh al-Ghawri, was among the pieces put on auction.
The Foreign Ministry had been notified to take necessary legal measures, he added.
