Rain closes roads, disrupts tourism in Upper Egypt, Red Sea

Heavy rainfall and floods have overwhelmed areas of Upper Egypt and the Sinai Peninsula recently, with several roads forced to close and tourist trips disrupted due to the weather.

In Qena, authorities were on high alert to handle heavy rains hitting the mountains on the road linking the governorate with the Red Sea. Governor Abdel Hamid al-Haggan said cars were barred from using the three roads leading to the Red Sea.

In the Red Sea, sources at the chamber of tourist companies said several operators had to recall their buses from the Qena-Safaga road, sheltering tourists in Luxor after roads were closed due to the floods. The sources told Al-Masry Al-Youm that tourists would be transported to Hurghada once roads are cleared and reopened.

South Sinai also witnessed extreme rains that prompted the closure of the Feiran-Saint Catherine road on Saturday. Milder rains were also seen in Nuweiba, with winds accelerating in the Taba area.
