A number of journalists staged a candle vigil outside the Journalists Syndicate late Wednesday marking the death of a colleague who died at a security checkpoint two years ago.
Tamer Abdel Rauf, head of state-run newspaper Al-Ahram’s bureau in Beheira, was shot dead at a security checkpoint in the province in 2013 during the hours of a curfew imposed over the nation-wide violence that followed the ouster of Mohamed Morsi.
His colleagues, and his relatives who attended the protest, demanded official recognition of Abdel Rauf as a victim of the curfew.
Abdel Rauf was driving his car after the curfew began along with Hamed al-Barbary, a friend from another state-run newspaper, Al-Gomhurriya. The Armed Forces had said that checkpoint personnel suspected the car and shot warning rounds of fire before one bullet killed Abdel Rauf.
