Official report: Fish Egyptians’ favorite protein

An official report issued by the Agriculture Ministry Tuesday revealed that fish is the Egyptian people's favorite kind of protein, while mutton is their least preferred.

The total amount of imported cattle, sheep, fish, hearts, liver and kidneys to Egypt from January until July was 319,149 tons, including 740 tons of liver and 10,125 tons of hearts and kidneys, an official report issued by the Central Veterinary Quarantine Department affiliated to the Agriculture Ministry said.

Imported quantities reflect domestic consumer demand, the report added.

204,226 tons of fish were imported during the same period, 83,266 tons of beef, 46,518 tons of buffalo meat, 27,146 tons of poultry and 1,049 tons of sheep meat.

Consumed fish exceeded beef with a total of 200,000 tons, ranking first among all types of protein, said official sources with the Agriculture Ministry.

Liver, kidneys, and hearts came second in the demand for meat, after beef, while the demand for buffalo meat finished third, followed by poultry and finally, mutton.
