Statement: Egypt’s army kills 205 militants in Sinai in past 3 days

Egypt's armed forces killed 205 militants in North Sinai during the past three days and since deadly attacks on security checkpoints on Wednesday, the armed forces spokesman said on Saturday.

The Sinai-based militant group Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis conducted a string of attacks on a number of security checkpoints and a police station in the Sinai town of Sheikh Zuweid on Wednesday, in a failed attempt to take over the town.

The attacks claimed the lives of 17 army personnel and injured 13, according to military figures. The military said it killed no less than 100 suspected militants on that day.

Military forces intensified the shelling of areas in North Sinai for harbouring suspected militants since the attacks.

Security forces are combing the al-Arish, Sheikh Zuweid and Rafah towns, in search of "terrorist hotbeds", the armed forces said in a statement.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi visited North Sinai earlier on Saturday donning military fatigues to inspect security forces.

The presidency said Sisi was keen to appear in a military uniform to salute each member of the armed forces and show solidarity with them.

In a more recent attack, Ansar claimed responsibility for three rockets fired into Southern Israel on Friday, with no damages or injuries reported.
