A women empowerment organization has hailed the appointment of Alexandria’s first female municipality head, calling for further similar decisions to bring women into leading executive positions.
The Association for the Development and Enhancement of Women lauded the decision by Alexandria Governor Hany al-Messiry to appoint Soad Helmy as head of Central Alexandria municipality, labelling the measure “unprecedented in the history of the governorate”.
ADEW chief, Eiman Papers, said in a statement on Tuesday said the selection of Helmy was based on her “long experience in the field, having started work at municipalities back in 1984”.
Papers urged citizens to “objectively assess” Helmy’s experiment.
“We are on the right track towards activating a larger engagement of women in public life”, Papers said in her statement.
