The Journalists Syndicate is following the developments concerning the detention of a reporter accused of affiliation with the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood.
Syndicate chief, Yahia Qallash, said the organization would keep following up on interrogations of Mohamed al-Battawy, a reporter at the state-run Akhbar Al-Youm, who was arrested at his residence a week ago over suspected links to the Brotherhood.
Qallash said that the syndicate would also help his family with the formalities related to visiting him at prison.
Battawy’s whereabouts were unknown for the past few days, but according to Qallash, the Interior Ministry had informed him that Battawy was detained at Tora Prison, south of Cairo.
Press freedom groups have frequently criticized the widespread crackdown on journalists since the ouster of former president Mohamed Morsi in 2013.
Several international reports have shown Egypt's decline in rankings related to press freedom over the past few years.
In 2014, Egypt ranked 6th among the ten most notorious jailers of journalists in 2014, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists.
