An activist campaign has called for world protests in solidarity with Egyptian political prisoners held since the ouster of former president Mohamed Morsi in 2013.
The Egypt Solidarity campaign has urged for two days of solidarity action outside Egypt on June 20 and 21 to mobilize support for the campaigns to free political prisoners.
“We are calling for international solidarity with all Egyptian political prisoners, in the hope that highlighting this one case will help build a movement campaigning for justice for the tens of thousands jailed by the military regime,” read the statement by the UK-based campaign, which was first launched in February 2014.
It decried mass death sentences issued against Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood colleagues and his backers as well jail terms issued against his liberal opponents
The campaign accused the current government of expanding repression through a large set of legislation, as well as committing human rights violations. “In 2014, about 90 Egyptian citizens were tortured to death in police stations, without anyone being held accountable or even proper legal investigations,” it said. “ ِAccording to the Arab Network for Human Rights Information, there 61 journalists have been jailed because of their writing or their work over the last two years in Egypt,” it added.
