Prime Minister Ibrahim Mehleb and the Electricity and Renewable Energy Minister will inaugurate Wednesday the third phase of the 1,300 MW al-Ain al-Sokhna power plant.
The power plant consists of two steam units, with a capacity of 650 MW each. It is run mainly with natural gas, but diesel fuel is also used as an alternative for natural gas.
The Ain Sokhna power station is part of a five-year plan (2012-2017) developed by the Electricity Ministry, a statement issued by the ministry said on Wednesday.
The plant is the first in Egypt and the Middle East operating using the "Ultra Super Critical" system, said the statement.
The investment into the plant amounted to approximately LE9.6 billion. The first phase was inaugurated in March 2015 and the second in April.
A number of international funding agencies, including the World Bank, the African Development Bank, the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development and the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development contributed to the project, according to the statement.
