Congolese authorities have banned the wearing of face veils in public places and prevented Muslims from other countries to stay overnight in mosques, according to the BBC.
A news report by the BBC on Friday said the Congolese government attributed the decision to its efforts in combating terrorism.
A government spokesperson said his country is a secular one that respects all religions and beliefs, however, some women use the face veil as a cover to commit terrorist acts. He added that the government has prevented people from staying in mosques overnight, as they are places of worship and not accommodations.
Less than five percent of Congolese people are Muslims, the BBC said. Congo is the first central African country to ban the face veil.
