A bomb exploded inside a car early on Saturday leaving one passenger dead and another injured in Beni Suef, about 100 kilometers south of Cairo, a top security official said.
Head of Beni Suef police's investigation unit Zakariya Abu Zineima accused the passengers of "belonging to the Muslim Brotherhood." He added that the injured passenger confessed that he was "on his way to bomb a police station."
The Interior Ministry said in a statement that the incident resulted in the injuries of two passersby and added that the deceased was 38-years-old.
A wave of violence broke out in Egypt following the military's ouster of Muslim Brotherhood politician and former president Mohamed Mursi in July 2013, after mass protests against his rule.
The Muslim Brotherhood has since been subjected to a wide crackdown and Brotherhood leaders and supporters have often found themselves behind bars and facing courts.
The period following Mursi's ouster has also witnessed an unprecedented surge in militancy, with the vast majority of explosions targeting security personnel and facilities.
The part of the country most affected by militancy is the Sinai Peninsula but attacks have taken place elsewhere, including in Cairo.
