The government is reactivating a plan that was devised in 2009 to turn the central Cairo train station exclusive for luxury trains and build other terminals for second class trains coming from Sinai, the Delta, the Oases and Upper Egypt and connect them to metro stations.
The plan will be assigned to a consultancy office to review after the Sharm al-Sheikh economic conference in March.
According to the plan, two terminals in Monib and Shubra al-Kheima will receive trains coming from Upper Egypt, Giza and the Delta. Also, a logistics and a maintenance station would be built in Abul Nomros south of Monib.
The plan aims to reduce congestion in Greater Cairo.
“Only the luxury trains will be allowed in the central station because this type of passengers do not take the metro,” said Sami Abu Zeid of the Housing Ministry.
