Religious Ministry withdraws preacher’s license for offending police, military

The Religious Endowments Ministry has withdrawn the temporary preaching license for Al-Azhar University Professor Maged Abdel Salam earlier this week, after he reportedly offended police and military and violated instructions on staying away from political and sectarian issues.

Mohamed Abdel Razeq, deputy minister and head of the ministry’s religious sector, said in remarks on Sunday that the university professor, who worked as an advisor to the former minister Talaat Afify, is being penalized after disregarding previous warnings.

Investigations into Abdel Salam’s sermons, according to Abdel Razeq, confirmed that he expressed solidarity with toppled President Mohamed Morsy and that he declared more than once that the ousted president would be reinstated, which violates ministry instructions.
