Cairo to host high-profile Arab conference on equality for women

Cairo will host on 2 and 3 February a high-profile Arab conference on justice and equality for women in the Arab region, discussing what could be achieved of goals previously agreed with the United Nations in that respect.

The Cairo conference is scheduled to discuss achievements made concerning the implementation of the 20-year-old Declaration and Platform for Action (Beijing+20).

The conference is sponsored by the United Nations Economic and Social Committee of Western Asia (ESCWA), UN Women and the Arab League, with their chairpersons scheduled to address attendants.

The conference is expected to host a constellation of political and diplomatic figures, as well as representatives of national Arab women’s bodies and NGOs.

“The primary objective of the conference is to reaffirm Arab States’ commitments to the principles enshrined in the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, and subsequently adopt an official Arab declaration underscoring a renewed pledge to enhance gender equality and women’s empowerment in the region,” said a statement by ESCWA.

The Beijing declaration, issued during the the UN’s fourth conference on women in 1995, represents a world framework for the accomplishment of gender equality and women empowerment.
