Expert: Egyptian media transformed following 25 January revolution

The Egyptian media has gone through several phases since the 25 January revolution, Dr. Hassan Ali of the Minya University’s Faculty of Mass Communication told Al-Masry Al-Youm.

The first period was about the official state media before the revolution, when it worked to promote the ruler and not provide information. At that time there was the private media of the businessmen, who he said pursued their own interests with Mubarak.

The second period he called the “Revolutionary Media” of the private satellite channels that incited against Mubarak and did not provide information, while the state media remained silent.

The third period he called the “Media of Mobilization” where both the private and the state media were lost between the rebels and the military council, sometimes siding with one party against the other and vice versa.

The fourth period was about a media that incited against the Muslim Brotherhood until it fell.

The current and last period of of a media that is promoting President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi in an unreasonable manner, which has benefited him and harmed him at the same time.

Safwat al-Alem, a media expert, said the media in the beginning was confused because it was afraid the revolution would fail. Then came a time where the media began levelling charges at the revolutionaries and the political forces, such as when they were accused of received money from abroad. Then the media tried to make the masses sympathize with Mubarak after he delivered his second speech.

Then came a phase where the media started supporting the military council. This was followed by another phase where the Brotherhood tried to dominate the private media.
