Assiut Criminal Court has sentenced Assem Abdel Maged, Jamaa al-Islamiyah leader, to 15 years in rigorous prison and five Muslim Brotherhood members to five years for each over charges of killing protesters during 30 June incidents in the province.
Abdel Maged fled the country to Qatar in 2013 as has been taking refuge there ever since.
Twenty-eight others were cleared including seven Brotherhood members in Assiut: Ali Ezz Eddin Thabet, secretary general of Freedom and Justice Party, Galal Abdel Sadeq, in charge of the party’s administrative office, Abdel Aziz Khalaf, former MP, Mohamed Abdel Gawad, group leader, al-Husseiny al-Zoumy, party youth secretary and Samir Khashaba, former MP.
Court also ordered that suspects be watched by police for three years.
Prosecution earlier referred the suspects to court over charges of murder, inciting riots and violence as well as attacking public and private properties.
Violence occurred at the province in the wake of 30 June incidents, which left three killed and another 49 injured.
