Transport Minister considers raising Metro prices

Transport Minister Hany Dahy said he is considering raising the price of the Metro ticket. “It is no equality or social justice for a passenger to pay the same for 65 stations as another for 15,” he said.

This came on Sunday at the signing of a protocol with the French ambassador in Cairo for the French government to finance the mobile units of the third stage (Ataba- Imbaba) and the fourth stage (Heliopolis-Cairo Airport) of the third Metro line for 344 million euros.

“Without the government’s 50 percent subsidy, a ticket would be eight pounds,” the minister said, pointing out that the Metro Authority lost 135 million pounds in 2013/2014. “Those losses should be reconsidered.”

Dahy said explosives detection devices were placed in stations to secure passengers, and female police personnel have been deployed.
