Government efforts have succeeded in treating eight patients of Hepatitis C with Sovaldi in Alexandria, but failed to combat bird flu, as the seventh infected case has been reported in Minya and another was reported on Menoufiya.
Dr. Medhat Hosni, director of the hepatic viruses treatment center at the Kabbari General Hospital in Alexandria, said the eight cases were healed but will continue the treatment for two more months.
He said there are 700 patients waiting for approval to be treated with Solvaldi. “There are 65,000 packs of Sovaldi in hospitals nationwide,” he said. “They will be increased to 225,000 by the end of this year.”
Dr. Gamal Esmat, vice chairman of the National Committee to Combat Viral Hepatitis, reassured patients that they would all be given Solvadi for free. “The cure rate of this medicine is more than 90 percent,” he said, adding that there will be two more medicines in the market within the next three months.
