A German company began manufacturing four giant excavators to be used in the construction of six tunnels beneath the Suez Canal.
The project is headed under the supervision of Engineer Hany Azer, a member of the Scientific Advisory Council to the Egyptian presidency and the prime minister's advisor for transport.
Official sources expect the Suez Canal Authority to sign a contract with two companies to construct the six tunnels, and reconstruct the entrances and exits of Port Said, Ismailia and Sinai by the end of November.
The construction of tunnels under the Suez Canal and air trains are being studied by experts and engineers from the Engineering Authority of the Armed Forces and the Egyptian Tunnels Authority, Azer told Al-Masry Al-Youm. The study will be concluded within weeks and the implementation of the projects will start within months, he added.
Engineers, technicians and workers affiliated to Egyptian companies that will construct the tunnels will travel to Germany during this month to be trained on running the machines used in the project, Azer said.
Meanwhile, Azer is holding meetings with ministers of transport and housing to discuss the air train project which would link 6 October City to Cairo, he said. Azer expected the project to start within the next few months.
President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has stressed, Azer said, that Egyptian youth must build the projects, not foreign companies.
