The Salafi Al-Nour Party attacked the administration of Prime Minister Ibrahim Mehleb over a high school history textbook in which it was mentioned that Al-Nour took advantage of the revolution and founded a religious party contrary to the Constitution and the goals of the revolution, which the party considered an insult and an attempt to tarnish its image.
The party said in a statement on Tuesday that it would escalate legal and political action against the government.
“This is ridiculous,” said party chairman Younis Makhyoun, adding that the government is thereby trying to exclude the Salafis from politics and disband the party.
He said the government is contradicting itself because it had sought the party’s help in devising the roadmap. “We will demand the dismissal of the minister of education,” he said. “He is generating hatred among students and opening the door to terrorist organizations like Islamic State to manipulate the minds of young people.”
Party Deputy Secretary General Shaaban Abdel Alim said the whole committee that prepared this textbook should be brought to account.
